About IPL Skin Treatment
IPL — Intense Pulsed Light — uses broad-spectrum filtered light rather than a single laser wavelength. That matters because different concerns absorb light differently. Melanin in brown pigmentation responds to one set of filters. Haemoglobin in superficial vessels responds to another. The practitioner selects the target and adjusts the settings accordingly.

It suits selected sun spots, uneven pigmentation, facial redness, visible vessels and general photodamage. What it does not do is treat every brown or red mark the same way. Because different skin conditions can look identical to the eye, the target is identified first .

What to Expect
Your skin is assessed for tone, recent tanning, the type of pigmentation or redness, and any photosensitising medication. Protective eyewear is worn throughout. Cooling gel or contact cooling is applied depending on the device protocol.

Light pulses are delivered across the selected area. The sensation is often described as a brief heat or an elastic-band snap — quick, and over before it registers as discomfort.

Results & Recovery
As the treated targets respond, the complexion looks clearer, brighter and more even. Selected brown spots become less noticeable over time. Visible redness fades more gradually as the body clears the treated vessels.

Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling can occur and settles on its own. Pigmented areas may darken and flake before fading. Vascular changes resolve more slowly. A course is often recommended depending on the concern, and daily sun protection is essential to protect the result.

IPL Skin Treatment Before & After
Results depend on the type and depth of the target, your skin tone and how many sessions you have completed. That is why progress is assessed over time rather than from a photo taken immediately after treatment. We can show you comparable cases during your visit.

Safety & Suitability
Recent tanning and some darker skin tones or pigment conditions carry a higher risk of burns or post-inflammatory colour change. Temporary redness, swelling, blistering or crusting can occur.

Questions About IPL Skin Treatment
Is IPL a laser?
No. IPL uses a broad spectrum of filtered light, while a laser emits a single, more specific wavelength. Both are light-based technologies, but they work differently and are selected for different targets. One is not inherently better — the right choice depends on what is being treated and your skin.

Can IPL treat pigmentation and redness in the same session?
Possibly. IPL can target both melanin and haemoglobin, but pigmentation and redness often require different filters or settings. Whether they can be treated together depends on your skin and the exact concerns. We will tell you during the consultation what is realistic in one session.

What happens to brown spots after IPL?
Suitable brown spots typically darken after treatment before they gradually fade or flake away. This darkening is part of the expected response — the pigment is being brought to the surface to be shed.

Can IPL be used on recently tanned skin?
Recent tanning increases the risk of burns and unwanted pigment changes, so treatment may need to be postponed until the skin returns to a safer baseline. This is one of the reasons we ask about sun exposure before every session.

How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the concern, the area and how your skin responds. Some targets improve after fewer sessions; others are best treated as a planned course. We will give you a realistic estimate during your assessment — not a number pulled from thin air.

Is IPL suitable for darker skin tones?
Suitability depends on the specific device, settings and the concern being treated. Some IPL protocols are limited to lighter skin types. During your consultation, we assess whether IPL is appropriate for your skin tone or whether a different approach would be safer and more effective.

Can IPL help with rosacea or couperose?
IPL can reduce visible redness and superficial vessels associated with rosacea and couperose. It does not cure rosacea — a condition that requires ongoing management. We will be honest about what IPL can and cannot achieve for your specific situation.
